Six Big Scholarships Worth Knowing About

There's a small set of national scholarships that offer full tuition or full-ride support to a select group of students each year. They're highly competitive, but they're also genuinely worth knowing about, because most families never hear of them until it's too late to apply. A few of these have deadlines that land during junior year, not senior year, which catches a lot of families off guard. Here's a quick overview of six of the big ones.

Posse Foundation

My own daughter was a Posse Scholar, and it's the program I know best firsthand. Posse identifies students with real leadership potential, not necessarily the highest test scores, and sends small groups of them to partner colleges together, with full-tuition scholarships and ongoing support for all four years.

Deadline: Nominations open in the spring of junior year. You cannot apply during senior year.

Typical Amount: Full tuition

Application Process: Students are nominated (often by a teacher or counselor), then go through a multi-stage Dynamic Assessment Process, including panel interviews and group activities, before being selected in December of senior year.

Cameron Impact Scholarship (Bryan Cameron Education Foundation)

This one is easy to miss because of its timing: it's a junior-year application for a senior-year award. Fifteen students a year receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship, and there's no financial need requirement, it's purely merit-based.

Deadline: Applications open during junior year and are reviewed on a rolling basis, with a hard cutoff around May 1 (or sooner, if the Foundation hits its 3,000-application cap first).

Typical Amount: Full tuition, fees, and books (does not cover room and board)

Application Process: Requires a minimum 3.7 unweighted GPA, two letters of recommendation, a transcript, and an application demonstrating leadership and community impact. About 100 finalists are interviewed in the fall, with 15 winners announced in December.

QuestBridge National College Match

QuestBridge connects high-achieving students from lower-income backgrounds with full four-year scholarships at more than three dozen selective partner colleges, including Ivy League and other top-tier schools.

Deadline: Late September / October 1 of senior year, with Match results announced December 1.

Typical Amount: Full cost of attendance: tuition, fees, room, board, and books

Application Process: Students submit the National College Match application, then rank up to 15 partner colleges. Finalists submit additional materials (FAFSA, CSS Profile, supplements), and colleges review and rank finalists in turn. Students are matched to the highest-ranked school on their list that also wants to admit them.

The Gates Scholarship

A highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding minority high school seniors from low-income households. It covers whatever's left after other financial aid, essentially removing the cost barrier entirely.

Deadline: Mid-September of senior year (typically September 15).

Typical Amount: Full remaining cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room, board, and books) after other aid is applied

Application Process: Requires U.S. citizenship, Pell eligibility, and a minimum 3.3 weighted GPA. The application emphasizes both academic achievement and demonstrated leadership. Roughly 300 students are selected nationally each year.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship

The largest scholarship of its kind for high-achieving seniors with financial need. Beyond the money, recipients get ongoing college advising and access to a large, active alumni network.

Deadline: Mid-November of senior year (application opens in August).

Typical Amount: Up to $55,000 per year, as last-dollar funding after other aid

Application Process: Requires a minimum 3.75 unweighted GPA, demonstrated financial need (family income generally under $95,000), test scores, essays, and recommendations, reviewed individually by a national committee.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program

Worth noting this one is a bit different from the others on this list: it's a flat $20,000 award rather than full tuition, but it's achievement-based rather than need-based, and it starts with a notably low-friction first step.

Deadline: September 30 of senior year.

Typical Amount: $20,000 (150 students selected nationally each year)

Application Process: Phase 1 requires no essay, transcript, or recommendation letters, just the base application. Essays, a transcript, and one recommendation are only required if a student advances to semifinalist status.

A quick note on timing

If your student is a junior right now, two of these, Posse and the Cameron Impact Scholarship, need attention this year, not next fall. The rest are senior-year applications, but several have deadlines in September, well before most families are deep into regular college applications. Worth marking these on a calendar early rather than discovering them in October.

If you want help figuring out which of these might genuinely be a fit for your student, and how to build a timeline that doesn't let any of these deadlines sneak past you, book a free intro call, or join one of my free info sessions to learn more about how I work with families.
